Presence and Motion Detection
Presence Detectors & Motion Sensors for Intelligent Building Automation
Whether it’s an entrance hall, a storage room, your private home, or a commercial building, Theben offers high-performance motion sensors and presence detectors to suit every application. Easy to install and effortless to operate, our solutions are designed to enhance comfort, safety, and energy efficiency across all spaces.
Energy-Efficient Lighting Control with Presence Detectors
Theben’s presence detectors are the ultimate solution for intelligent, energy-saving lighting control. Perfect for offices, corridors, and public buildings, our detectors also enable heating and air conditioning to be managed based on occupancy. This not only helps reduce energy costs but also significantly cuts CO2 emissions.
Our presence detectors respond to even the slightest movement and continuously monitor ambient light levels. When no movement is detected or the set brightness threshold is exceeded, the detector automatically switches off the lighting, ensuring no energy is wasted.

How Does a Presence Detector Work?
Both presence detectors and motion sensors, often referred to as PIR sensors, detect infrared thermal radiation within their detection zone. When a person moves within range, the sensor converts this thermal radiation into an electrical signal, activating the lighting or other connected systems.
What’s the Difference Between a Motion Sensor and a Presence Detector?
The key distinction lies in sensitivity:
- Presence detectors feature highly sensitive sensors that divide their detection area into up to 1000 zones, enabling them to pick up even the smallest movements – like someone typing at a desk. They also offer continuous light measurement, turning lights off as soon as sufficient daylight is available, even if movement continues. This maximises energy savings and reduces CO2 emissions.
- Motion sensors (PIR sensors) are ideal for detecting larger, more obvious movements, such as someone walking through a hallway or approaching a building entrance. However, they typically measure light only once – when first activated – meaning lights can remain on unnecessarily if movement is ongoing.
Square Detection Area for Precise Coverage
Our presence detectors feature a square detection area with a 360° field of view, making planning simple and effective – especially for square or rectangular rooms. This ensures seamless coverage without blind spots or overlaps, offering reliable detection throughout the entire space. Unlike circular detection zones, our square layout provides optimal room coverage with maximum precision.
